What I Do When I Start Drifting Away From God

There are times I don’t notice it at first.

Nothing dramatic happens. I’m not out here doing anything wild. Life just gets busy… school, responsibilities, overthinking, trying to keep everything together.

And slowly, quietly, I start drifting.

Not all at once. Just little things:
I stop praying as much.
I tell myself I’ll read my Bible “later.”
Worship becomes something I skip instead of something I need.

And before I know it, I still believe in God… but I don’t feel close to Him anymore

The Part Nobody Really Talks About

Sometimes drifting doesn’t look like rebellion.

It looks like being tired.
It looks like being distracted.
It looks like trying to survive your own life.

And if I’m being honest, there are moments I don’t even feel like coming back.

Not because I don’t love God… but because I feel off. Distant. A little guilty.

Like, “What’s the point? I’ve already been inconsistent.”

What I’ve Learned About Myself

I used to think drifting meant I was doing something terribly wrong.

Now I’m starting to realize:
Sometimes it just means I stopped being intentional.

Nothing pulls you away from God faster than being on autopilot.

What I Actually Do When I Notice I’m Drifting

Not the “perfect Christian answer.” Just what’s real for me.

1. I stop pretending and just talk to God honestly

No long prayers. No pressure.

Sometimes it’s just:
“God, I feel far from You… and I don’t even know how to fix it.”

That’s it.

And somehow, that honesty feels better than trying to sound spiritual.

2. I go back to something simple

I don’t try to read 10 chapters or do a full routine.

I keep it small:

  • one scripture
  • one worship song
  • one quiet moment

Because I’ve learned this the hard way:
Consistency grows from simplicity, not pressure.

3. I remove the guilt (this one is big)

Guilt keeps you stuck longer than distance ever will.

If I keep thinking:
“I’ve been a bad Christian”
“I should be doing better”

…I end up avoiding God even more.

So I remind myself:
God isn’t surprised I drifted.
And He’s not waiting to reject me.

4. I rebuild slowly instead of rushing back

I used to try to “fix everything in one day.”

That never lasted.

Now I just focus on showing up again… little by little.

Because real connection isn’t forced, it’s rebuilt.

Something I’m Still Learning

Closeness with God isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about returning.

Again and again and again.

Even when it feels repetitive.
Even when it feels small.
Even when I don’t feel anything at all.

If You’re Feeling This Too

You’re not the only one.

Drifting happens.
But staying there doesn’t have to.

You don’t need a perfect plan to come back.

You just need a moment of honesty… and a step.

Even a small one.

I’m still figuring this out myself.

But one thing I know for sure:

God doesn’t move away from us.
We just get distracted sometimes.

And the moment we turn back, no matter how far we think we’ve gone….He’s still there.
