Trying to Be a Good Christian but Still Struggling? Same.

Let be real for a minute, being a Christian isn’t always easy. You know, those moments when you’re trying your best to live out your faith, but life hits you with distractions, doubts, and a whole lot of pressure? If you’ve ever felt like you’re trying to be a good Christian but still falling short, you’re not alone. I’m right there with you, navigating this messy journey of faith and trying to figure it all out.

I was born into a Christian home and grew up with a strong foundation in my faith. As a child, I was that kid who could recite memory verses, participated in church camps, and even tucked my Bible under my pillow for protection at night. I was confident and eager to learn! But as I grew older, things changed. I started drifting away. I still identified as a Christian, but my devotion faded. In high school, I was just coasting through, committing sins, feeling guilty, but convincing myself it didn’t matter because after all, I was living for the moment, right?

The Pressure to “Get It Right”

Once I finished high school and moved back to the U.S. for college, I had a wake-up call. I realized I needed a change. In late 2023, I started my journey to reconnect with God. I began letting go of some habits while holding on to others, hoping to stop. By 2024, I was determined to grow closer to God, and while I stumbled along the way, I didn’t give up. I found a solid foundation to build on and have been committed to strengthening my faith in 2025.

But let’s be honest, the pressure to be a “good” Christian still hangs over me. There are days when I struggle with consistency, praying, reading scripture, and just staying connected. It’s easy to feel like I’m not doing enough, especially when it seems like everyone else has it all figured out while I’m just trying to find my way.

My Personal Struggles

I often question my faith: Am I doing enough? Why do I still struggle with certain sins? The guilt can be overwhelming. There have been moments when I felt distant from God, wondering if I’m still on the right path. But here’s the thing: struggling doesn’t mean I’m not a good Christian, it means I’m human. And guess what? We all are.

Having a friend to keep me accountable has been a game-changer. We started doing Bible plans together, assigning a book of the Bible to read each month. Discussing what we’ve read helps me pick up my Bible more often and reminds me that I’m not alone in this process. Plus, I’m still trying to find a community of believers to walk alongside me, that’s part of why I started this blog. I want to build a space where we can support each other and share our journeys.

God’s Love Despite the Struggle

One comforting truth I’ve learned is that God’s love isn’t based on my performance. He doesn’t expect perfection, he simply desires a heart that seeks Him. I often reflect on Romans 5:8, which reminds us, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” No matter where we are in our faith journey, God is always there, ready to welcome us back with open arms.

Small Ways to Keep Going

So, what can we do when we feel like we’re struggling to be good Christians? Here are a few small, intentional steps that have helped me stay connected:

  • Talk to God Casually: Prayer doesn’t have to be formal or perfect. Share your thoughts, doubts, and even frustrations with God like you would with a friend.
  • Surround Yourself with Encouraging People: Finding a community of believers who are also navigating their faith can be a game-changer. We lift each other up and remind one another that we’re in this together.
  • Find Comfort in Simple Prayers: Sometimes, a quick “Help me, God!” or “Thank you for today” is all it takes to reconnect with my faith.

You’re Not Alone in This

If you’re trying to be a good Christian but still struggling, know it’s okay. Faith isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being real. Embrace your journey, seek help, and reach out to a community. That’s why I have my blog, to help others and remind you that you’re not alone. We’re all works in progress, and that’s what makes this faith journey so beautiful. Let’s keep seeking, questioning, and growing together.
